Material Guidelines

Proper material selection, surface condition, and packaging ensure optimal coating results. Follow these guidelines when preparing materials for finishing.

Acceptable Substrates

We coat aluminum and selected steel components. Here are the most common alloys we process.

Alloy Typical Use Notes
6063-T5/T6 Extrusions Most common architectural alloy
6061-T6 Structural components Higher strength applications
3003-H14 Sheet/panels Good formability
5005-H34 Sheet/panels Excellent anodizing match
5052-H32 Sheet/panels Marine applications

Note: Contact us before shipping non-aluminum substrates or unusual alloys. We may need to adjust our pretreatment process for optimal results.

Surface Condition Requirements

Materials should arrive clean and free of contaminants for best results.

Ideal Condition

  • Clean mill finish, minimal oxidation
  • Free of oils and lubricants
  • No visible scratches or defects
  • Stored indoors, protected from elements

What to Avoid

  • Mill finish oxidation
  • Fingerprints/handling marks
  • Cutting fluids/lubricants
  • Marker/ink

Contaminants to Avoid

Mill finish oxidation

Heavy oxide buildup from extended storage

Fingerprints/handling marks

Oils from bare-hand handling

Cutting fluids/lubricants

Residue from fabrication processes

Marker/ink

Part identification marks in coating areas

Tape residue

Adhesive from protective or masking tape

Weld spatter

Spatter in areas to be coated

Deep scratches

Mechanical damage beyond pretreatment repair

Pitting/corrosion

Surface degradation from improper storage

Packaging for Shipment

Proper packaging prevents damage during transit and ensures parts arrive in optimal condition.

Interleaving

Place paper or foam between parts to prevent surface-to-surface contact.

Foam Protection

Use foam corners or end caps on extrusion ends to prevent damage.

Secure Bundling

Bundle extrusions securely with strapping and cardboard edge protectors.

Weather Protection

Wrap bundles in plastic to protect from moisture during transit.

Important Notes

  • Use gloves when handling parts to avoid fingerprints on surfaces to be coated.
  • Mark identification numbers in areas that will not be coated (back side, cut ends).
  • Include packing list with part numbers and quantities for verification.
  • Photograph material condition before shipping for your records.
